Scotland for the first time!

Ashamed to say that we have reached retirement and have never visited Scotland! Plan to put that right next year and would appreciate some advice regarding the "must see's". We will be visiting Northumberland on our way north  and then Edinburgh but where
to after that? We will be towing a caravan and mainly staying on CL's and will have about four weeks in Scotland. Also, what time of year is likely to be best for weather and scenery? Any advice most appreciated!
