Bilbao ferry sea water engine problems!

We used the Portsmouth-Bilbao (Cap Finistere ferry) for the first time a couple of weeks ago. This boat has a small outsid car deck area and our panel van was one of half a dozen parked open to the elements. On arrival, apart from being covered in
a thick layer of salt, the van started OK and we drove off the ferry and all was well until we got to the exit roundabout in the port when the engine died and all the warning lights came on. Nothing would get it to restart. To cut a long storey short, after
24+ hours of trying to diagnose the problem, Bilbao Peugeot discovered the problem was a waterlogged connector in the engine. Their computer originally mis-diagnosed it as a faulty sensor around the exhaust cat. After a clean and dry the problem was fixed. Questions: Is there something I should have done to prevent this problem? Are Peugeots venerable to water in the connectors? Apart from not using the ferry, any advice? Thanks in advance.
