Don't know HD. I'm singing Bernard Cribbins song, "There I was digging this 'ole ..."
Perhaps the same reason as, when they see a 'wet paint' sign, they have to test it. My dad used to put a blob of paint on something with a sign that said 'test here'.

HD, what shape hole is it?

Do you need a half spade to dig a half of a hole. I have never seen half a hole.

At the moment it's square , but i think they have only dug half of ithe hole , so it's not really a whole hole yet
Oh, you looked in it then
that's why I asked

Only to see if they have uncovered any of my bones
So when they have finished digging the hole will it then be Oblong? twice as deep or just square but twice as big?

Don't knock digging holes, they found Richard III in one a couple of years ago! Just don't let anyone drop a cig end in!

How does that song go? "It all makes work for a working man to do." So leccy dig a hole - puncture the gas main - Gas Board fracture the water pipe, water company breaks the sewer and they in turn sever the TV/phone cables. Seems the best option may be
to move shop Husky.0 -
Perhaps they don't want to be seen looking in your window, HD!

Perhaps they are really tunnelling under your shop HD.

I was walking across a building site with a workmate, talking away and not watching were we were going. He fell into a deep hole, so deep I couldn't even see him but I could hear him moving around.
I shouted down " Paddy have you broken anything?"
"No" he shouted back " it's empty"".

I find such holes fascinating. Amazing to see all the pipes and cables that lie unseen beneath the surface. You'd really think that they'd have come up with something better than this by now, maybe some sort of services conduit covered by removable slabs.
Also interesting to see how thin the layer of road stone actually is, before hole goes back into clay.

Just get some matching spray paint and mark off any bits of defective tarmac you would like relaid as well.
