Motorhome trip to Portugal with dog

Hello

We were caravanners for years and after a break we have now bought a small motorhome.

Toying  with the idea of getting the dog a passport and driving down to the algarve inPortugal for a few weeks in September.

How does it work with dog on crossings, especially if we opted for Bilbao/santander,

any view, experiences, tips etc
