Route to St Petersburg

We're thinking of visiting St Petersburg in September/October 2015 with our motorhome. Has anyone taken their unit there? I'd be grateful for any advice re. sites in and around the area and any specific requirements for travel in Russia. The plan is to travel from the south via Poland but I'd be interested in a return route either via the Baltic States or via Scandinavia.
