France - Are roads in East busier than in West?

Hello.

Have travelled between Le Havre and Spain (Motorhome) last two years and was surprised how quiet roads were. SHMBO is suggesting South-Eastern France next year, perhaps from Calais.Now back to caravanning, I'm wary that the roads in that area may be busier
because of proximity to most of the rest of Europe. Can anyone confirm or otherwise?
