France at Xmas? Weather/Site Suggestions

Morning all

Thinking of taking the family away on Boxing Day and driving down through France to search for some sun.

I know it will be cooler, but any idea on how warm it would be and any suggestions.  Thinking Djion or lower, perhaps as low as Frejus/St Tropez.

Castels sites all seem to be closed (ive emailed them directly to ask) but any other suggestions of a mid size site that are open would be great.

Just get fed up of being at home from Xmas Day to New years day.

Thanks

Curly

We are planning to go to Alsace in Nov/Dec for the Christmas markets.  In this area there are lots of sites open as the markets are popular, however most sites in France are closed during winter although I'm sure some in the south will be open.  We have
only found one site for an overnight stop on our route - Kawan Lac de Bouzey near Epinal.  People who travel to Spain for winter may have suggestions.  Put  French camping sites open all year into your browser, this comes up with useful info.  I am not anticipating
warm weather as we're not going far south but I am taking shorter daylight hours into consideration re driving,  Hope others have more info.  Good luck

If you Google 'weather' you can find out the average temperatures etc of virtually every town for every month of the year.

I dont trust the local/national weather for tomorrow let alone Xmas this year - Apparently a record breaking heat wave was due today according to the press yesterday.  Total Tosh.... :-)  Id rather have somebody that has been before - not expecting it to
be extremely hot (as it has been when we have been down in August), just more of an average...

    This
    site
used to be open all year although best to confirm that it is still the case.

The weather records I refer to are fact and obviously not a forecast. It certainly wasn't my intention to mislead you.

PS. The weather forecast for our town said it would be 30C today.....it's wrong again............. it's 31.2C...I know what you meanSurprisedHappy

You can use this 'Historical Weather records' website to have a look at different places in France for December, going back as many years as you wish.  As you'll see Dijon is cold - high temperatures of between 8 degrees and 11 in January and plenty of rain
early on in January.  Nice is a bit warmer, so if I were you I would go as far south as you can.

We've been to southern France in late December and January and believe me it was cold at night!

In January, it can be blooming cold at night even down on the Costa Blanca. Snow, whilst rare, is not unknown. Perhaps a roaring log fire in Ye Olde English Hotel?

If you like city life then main campsites in Central Paris and Lyon will be open, and so will those like Le Grand Bornand in ski resorts  - but Easyjet   will be flying to Teneriffe and far beyond.

    Cannot agree with that.

You need a plan to deal with water in and water out but camping in temperatures lower than this is fine, fun even.

Camped in colder than this in a tent

These days I would prefer fyshing in the florida keys in our winter but I have done my time in sub zero conditions and it's no problem at all subject to a plan for water.

I find this site useful for looking up weather trends :

    http://www.whatstheweatherlike.org/

It was certainly accurate last year when I planned our winter in Spain.
