Which Way To Go ?

What is the best route from Scarborough to Wensleydale? The obvious route is the A170 from Scarborough to Thirsk but this is a no no with Sutton Bank in the way. The alternatives seem to be either going on the A171 via Whitby to Middlesborough then down
to Northallerton and Bedale or the A64 to York and then back up to Thirsk, Northallerton and Bedale. Both routes look roughly the same distance  but the northern route appears to be a bit more hilly. Both look as though they are about half as long again as
the 'direct' route on the A170.
