Poitou-Charentes Region

Can anyone tell me what the Poitou-Charentes region of France is like?  A programme on TV today showed some of the area, particularly the many waterways north and west of Niort In the 'Marais'. It looked quite interesting but with all that water about are
mosquitoes a problem in mid to late June?

We're not particularly interested in the west coast but like touring around old towns and villages. Is this an area for us?
