Electonic tolls in Portugal

We are heading from Spain into Portugal over the next couple of days and have heard horror stories about getting through them, we dont have a credit card only debit cards, we have looked on the web site about this but to be honest are more confused now !we are going to be travelling the coast from north to south, a does anyone have any tips for us please ?
