WiFi signal booster - do they work

Hi all thinking of getting one of these but do they work? has anyone been using one? is there one that is better than others? what should I be looking for in one. Thinking of continental use mainly where its free but you have to go up to the reception or
bar to use it, any help would be appreciated.
