Spain/Portugal or Italy, Spring or Autumn 2015

We are thinking of going to Spain/Portugal & Italy next year but we can't decide when the best time for Italy would be, Spring or Autumn, we are thinking of leaving Scotland around mid April - June & then again in September - November, Hull - Zeebrugge we
are happy with the route we want to take but can't decide which way round we should do them, I know Spain/Portugal will be OK either times but what about Italy?

I would welcome some advice from others who have been to Italy at both times of year, we haven't been for many years and it was always July/August when we went.
