Stopping overnight in Aires

Having recently returned from France I have heard people pitch up in aires overnight, the ones I stopped at for fuel and short breaks did not appear to have harried off areas that I have heard talk of, or am I not looking properly, so I ask...are the aires
where caravans pitch overnight behind secure barriers( and pay a small fee)or or they just in the car parks of service stations
