Ferry ramps

Is there any consistency in where cars with caravans are located on a ferry? On our recent outward journey via P & O from Hull to Rotterdam we were located on the lorry deck with easy on and off access but on our return journey via Brittany Ferries from
Le Havre to Portsmouth we had to negotiate a very steep ramp up to a car deck. Very stressfull and very wearing on the tow car's clutch. I would be interested in other members experiences and whether or not anyone has challenged ferry staff and been allowed
to park on the lorry deck.
