Sicily next winter

We're thinking of going to Sicily next winter (actually, early March) and pose the following questions....            Going the direct route (Holland, Germany, Switzerland Italy) will I need winter tyres?                                        What is the
refugee situation in Southern Sicily?            I know that the last one is a 'how long is a piece of string' question, but there may be members who have been there recently and will know.
