Dogs in Spain
Not sure where to put this.
Going to Spain with our dog for the first time January. Any additional immunisation recommend?
I'm wondering about leichs*"'"* out whatever it's called.

There is advice about vaccination, and about the Scalibor collars which are often recommended as well.

You've got the dog chipped & rabies & pet passport? Dog has to be wormed on way back. Make sure all documentation in PP is absolutely correct or you won't be able to go/come back.
We go to the vet and get a "Travel Pack" with various wormers, tick/flee treatments etc.
As WTG says, look up info on Processionaria as even the hairs can cause considerable discomfort and occasionally worse - applies to humans too. Their cocoons are easily recognisable once you know what to look for.

It is transmitted by the female sandfly (mosquito family that breed in damp soil, not stagnant water). peedee is correct - these nasties don't fly when temp below 20c.

Thanks for the advice. We are aware of the processionary caterpillars having count across them in March in Provence three years ago. I was concerned about the Leishmaniasis.
We travel three times a year to France so are planning to return via the Vendée so we can go to our regular vets before returning.

Unfortunately that is not strictly true. We stayed at La Manga in December when a UK couple lost their Golden Retreiver that contracted visceral leishmaniasis and died within days. Sandflies are active at temperatures above 15C which is the case on the Med coast of Spain in the winter. Speak to your vet about both Advantix and a Scalibor or Soresto collar for your pet to keep them safe. Sandflies bite at dawn, dusk and overnight so also keep your dog indoors at those times too. One of our 4 Spanish rescue dogs developed leishmaniasis two years after we rehomed her so we are now very aware of the condition, its treatment, and (hopefully) how to avoid our others getting it.
