Having found out our cards were due to expire in April I went online this morning to renew them The first site I went to wanted £19.95, then the next site which appeared to be a NHS one had an administrative fee of £17.95. I then looked up the .gov site quoted on my EHIC card itself which did say some commercial sites are charging for applications for these cards but then I eventually found a link for a FREE renewal.
