First Time in France! Help

Me and my OH are heading to Sorrento in Italy for a wedding in Aug 14. We are planning on driving down through France and stopping near Geneva (in france though) and catching a flight from there for a couple of days. We want to stop enroute to make a 2 week
holiday out of it. Can anyone suggest the best route/campsites please? Is it likely to cost a fortune on Tolls? Any advice at all would be greatly received.
