7 pin to 13 pin conversion

Hello

I have a new 2012 Pasat Estate recently fitted with a towbar and 13

 pin electrics. My van is a year 2000 Abbey Expression. After a major headache on the start day of our last trip out when, via a convertor, we couldn't get the van lights working at all, I am considering converting the van to 13pin myself.

Some disccusions here, and elsewhere suggest this can be problematic on older vans (pre '98 is) quoted.Does anyone have any advice as to whether this should be a straightforward job with no compatability issues on this van?
