Small sites in Europe.

We are planning to take our first trip to Europe this year, towing the van. In the Uk we normally stay on club sites with no toilet blocks, or CLs. In the club overseas section all of the sites appear to be large multi facility affairs. Does anyone have
any experience or advice about how to search out safe and good small sites, or even if it is possible?
