Routes down to northern Italy

I am just starting to plan our trip down to N Itay next summer. My initial thoughts are to head from Calais via Belgium, Germany and Austria down to the lakes.

We plan to try and avoid motorwatys as much as possible; take a week to do the run; and use aires (or their equivalent) as well.

After a couple of weeks there the plan is to come back via Austria SW Germany and into NE France. Again, any suggestions would be most welcome
