There have been previous threads on Wifi amplifiers, now lost in the back pages somewhere. We've had three Alfa wifi amplifiers, two of which burnt out after a year's use, and the third ( very cheap) turned out to be a Chinese counterfit. While the genuine Alfas worked well, they could draw in excess of the 500mA allowed by our laptop's usb ports. The ports then shut down and you lose the signal.

Having done a bit of searching on-line we came across recommendations for 'Bear Extenders'. We tracked down the UK agent and bought one. In our last 8 week trip to France, our Bear Extender worked perfectly and we were able to pick up free-near-reception wifi on our pitches, and to connect to off-site FON signals. The device never seemed to get hot and never overloaded the usb ports.

We have no connection with the company, but thought others would be interested in our recommendation.
