Continental Camping Car Boom
We've spent a fair amount of time this year touring in France, Spain and Portugal ( we're in the Ardeche as I type) and we've come to the conclusion that there has been a significant increase in the number of motorhomes about. Without statistics, it's just an impression but we've noted:
More Dutch-registered motorhomes and fewer caravans.
More and bigger German-registered vans.
Campsites very busy even in low season.
Many newly-retired-looking couples with large brand new motorhomes.
Theories we've heard seeking to explain the boom include: No one wanting to buy retirement appartments in Spain; the Germans are now being taxed on ex-patria properties and so are buying large motorhomes instead.
Has anyone else been aware an increase? Any other theories?
