I appreciate that many with large 4x4 cars to tow their caravans do so for perfectly valid and justifiable reasons but it strikes me that anybody looking at getting into the hobby or indeed keeping costs down should realise that a 4X4 is far from essential dependant on your intentions. We stay at caravan sites with full facilities (our van does not have a shower) and don't feel limited in our enjoyment of the hobby. At all these sites the roads will be tarmac or gravel and invariably hard standing. We tow a fairly large van 1600Kg with a Ford Galaxy 2.0 diesel returning well over 40mpg not towing and mid 30's towing. Tows great....never had a problem. You just see so many 4x4's on club sites and you can imagine the fuel their burning up to get there. We did start out with a 4x4 by the way which would not get more than 15mpg towing ....... that just had to go. Certainly if you ever intend to be staying in CL's in the middle of winter in the center of a field you may have less options but I guess for many, the regular family car is a very workable solution.

Anyway just a thought for anybody considering what towing vehicle to use. Not intended as a dig at 4x4 owners (maybe I'm just jealous!      Wink     )
