First time abroad where's the best place to stay in France

We are planning on taking the plunge next year and travelling overseas to France but are unsure what region in best. There will only be me and hubby so prefer quieter sites but with full facilities and like the sunshine. Will be looking at cycling and walking,
exploring the area so hope for somewhere pretty and interesting but which is easy to get to.
