1.6 versus 2 litre engine fuel economy

I'm looking at purchasing a Peugeot 308SW - the 1.6 diesel and 2 litre fuel economy is supposed to be the same when not towing.

Can anyone say what the fuel economy difference between the two would be when towing 1300kg caravan?

    I've no personal experience of this car - indeed I loathe Peugeots - but logic says the 2.0 will not be working so hard when towing and, therefore, should not give worse MPG than the 1.6 and may actually return better figures.

    Personally, I wouldn't contemplate any car under 2.0 as a towcar for a 1300kg van.

    In caravanning (as in other things) bigger is better.

    From experience a more lightly stressed engine is more reliable! We've fitted more than 1 turbo to the 1.6 engine! Can't remember fitting any to the 2.0 litre

    Which suggests the 1.6 is working too hard.

    A lot may depend on the gearing. Cars labelled economy usually achieve this with very high gearing which might make them poor tow cars. At the same time a smaller engine will have to work harder so may use more fuel because of this. Both will have differences
    in the drive line that will further complicate matters,

    In the end there is no way of being sure which will be the most economical tow car.

    Many thanks...I think I'll go for the 2 litre engine...a pity the pre registered Mondeo estates in colours rather than white or black are so rare, as I would have gone for one of those instead, but the 12 depreciation on a new one is horrendous!

    You are right about the depreciation on the Mondeo but what a good looking car it is.

    A low milage year old 4x4 version might be a cracking buy.

    If your option is a Mundaneo then surely a 508 estate would be better to consider, or a Focus? The 308 is a Golf/focus class sector car.... and personally i would rather have a black or white Mundaneo than just about any Purged O. The old rule of thumb used
    to be drive the biggest engined car you can afford and tow the smallest lightest van you can manage with.

    As long as it wasn't French. SWMBO's C3 is the biggest, most expensive (in terms of things that have failed on a 27000 mile, 60 plate) car we've ever had.
