Overtaking on the motorway

Here's one for you to think about.

 When towing on the motorway and the first two lanes are  busy, how long can you use the outside (3rd) lane for.

a) 1/2 mile

b) 1 mile

c) as long as it takes to safley overtake and return to the inner lanes.
