france to spain first time

We are intending travelling with our caravan for the first time to Spain  via France with a few stop offs on the way. We will leave the UK in September and return in November - have read that snow chains are necessary but was wondering if this can be avoided
in any way by using a particular route.  We're thinking of spending our time mostly in Bonterra. Any information with regard to routes/sites etc would be much appreciated.  Thanks
