Annecy to Italy?

Hi, just wondered if anyone could give me some advice. I was wondering where to go next year around late August early September for three weeks in France. Has anyone been to Annecy ?  I would like to be able to visit Switzerland and Italy. I would like to
have a few days in Lake Como but it's quite a journey from Annecy. We wanted to leave the caravan on a campsite for a few days and book and drive to a hotel there. My question is does anyone know of a nice area which is nearer to these two countries than Annecy?
 I looked at Chamonix but it looks to me that it's a ski resort and wouldn't be suitable. Any advice would be appreciated. Sue
