Calais to Lake Garda?

Hi, just thinking of next years  holiday. We love France but fancied Italy for a change but not sure how hard it would be. We normally travel from Calais. We normally have three weeks in late August early September. We wondered whether anyone had done this
trip before and what Italy's roads are like and also their campsites in comparison to France?  We would like to have at least ten days in Lake Garda and the rest for travelling down and back to Calais maybe staying near Paris for a few days on the way back.
We know we will have to have numerous stops but that's all part of the holiday but if anyone could recommend any nice sites on the way down that we be much appreciated. Would welcome any advice. Many thanks. Sue
