Route from Barcelona to Toulouse

We are currently in Salou enjoying the gorgeous Spanish weather and we are planning our route home. Usually we take the Motorway up the coast to Narbonne and then Carcasonne but the RAC has a shorter route, the E09 inland upto Foix and joining the A61. We
are wondering if anyone has used this route, if it is suitable for caravans and whether although shorter this route would end up taking much longer than the alternative. Any advice would be much appreciated.
