Pre-ferry parking in Portsmouth

We are travelling from the Midlands to catch the overnight ferry to Caen on Sunday.  Does anyone have any tips on parking areas we can use if we get down there too early - not too sure how far in advance of sailing you are allowed onto the port area, and
would rather not be sitting there if possible!
