carver drain plug - in or out for the winter?

Drained the water system yesterday but had to leave whilst it was draining.  Normally when it's finished I put the drain plug back in to stop spiders etc crawling in over the winter.  (Does that ever happen?)  However, I think I read recently that the drain
plug should be left out for the winter.  What does everybody else do?
