Ferry Puzzle

Lucky enough to be going to France at the end if this month for the first time with the caravan. We have a night sailing from Portsmouth to Caen. So here begins my query:

1. As the sailing is not till late at night, does anybody have tips on where to stop with caravan in tow for a nice evening meal prior to boarding?

2. Do we tell the ferry operator we have bikes on the roof of the car even though the caravan will probably higher in height and we've told them the height of the van.

3. Is it easy going on and off the ferry?

4. On the return journey we also have a night sailing from Caen. Any tips on things caravanners do prior to boarding? E.g. Can we unhitch at ferry port and go off to pass time until nearer boarding time?

Any tips or advice on any past experiences will be greatly appreciated as I'm getting nervous as te gets closer.:O

Thanks.;)
