Bilbao Night Halt

We've stopped at an aire in Vittoria-Gasteiz a few times, usually on the way back, but if you're late it's about half an hour from Bilbao, in a huge carpark so if the aire is full there will still be room. Great baker just across the road and plenty shops
and a park within walking distance. You come in on dual carriageway and go past the aire on the other side of the road, so take the LH lane and cross over at traffic lights and head back a short distance to the entrance on your right.

Geejay, you must be crazy even thinking about staying overnight at a motorway car park. You are asking to be robbed. This is really bad advice. For the cost of a camp site this is false economy!!

There is space in the port at Bilbao to park up for the night before departing the following morning. Toilets and fresh water are available too. Brittany Ferries briefly. mention this on their web site. We have used the facility a couple of times with no
problem at all. It is also possible to park overnight on the return journey if you time your arrival at the port correctly (or wat nearby). If you arrive at the terminal check in just after the last outward ferry is loading, the
staff at the kiosk may even check through to the secure lanes, where every other lane is utilised so that you are not too closely parked to other vehicles.0 -

I hope Geejay is amused at you saying he must be crazy. i suspect he is a far more experienced traveller than you are, Simon.

Reading Geejay's post again, I think he did mention an Aire in Vittoria-Gasteiz BUT if that was full there was a huge car park half an hour from Bilbao that would have room, I would suspect its one of the huge lorry parks tht AD refers to. At least that
was my understanding.0 -
Just to clarify, and without being rude to people who don't read properly or check out the details, the Aire is near the centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz, (quite a large town/city). It is in the corner of a large carpark (near the centre of the town) so a caravaner
could quite easily park up for the night in the car park. It is well lit, well away from the dreaded motorway parking areas (where lots of folk on other forums park quite safely) and is very handy for some lovely Spanish shops. Vitoria is about half an hour
from Bilbao. You can also find it in All the Aires and other lists of (inspected) aires. We've stayed there several times. The town also has a website with a picture of the aire.
Hope that clarifies things.
