Do I really need towing mirrors with a narrow van?
Hello everyone,
I pull a rapido pop top which is 1800mm wide with my fiat doblo which is 1714mm wide. So very nearly the same width as the caravan as makes any difference.
My question is this: what is the law regarding towing mirrors if I have a perfect view without them?
My Doblo has very large van/like mirrors and when I am hitched to my caravan I can see perfectly down the side (top to bottom)
My only worry is that the law appears to be a bit of a grey area and the last thing I want is to get points/fine because there was something in the law I wasn't aware of.
On the .gov website it states the following:
"Towing mirrors
You must have an adequate view of the road behind you. If your caravan or trailer is wider than the rear of the towing vehicle, you may need to fit suitable towing mirrors.
If you tow without proper towing mirrors you can be:
- prosecuted by the police
- given 3 points on your licence
- fined up to £1,000"
There is nothing more definitive than this I can find. Because my van is the same width as my doblo MPV surely from the quote above I can not be prosecuted.
??
What do you guys know about this?
Your help is appreciated...
