Car Insurance in Europe

I have arranged standard Red Pennant for my trip in two weeks time - 90 days for £245. It wasn't until I was reading the documents that I realised that I had forgotten to extend my car insurance to cover the car  while abroad - another £146 for 90 days with
Direct Line. Expensive and unbudgeted! I was formerely with M & S which had euro cover inbuilt, changed them because Direct Line were  lots cheaper, but maybe not so much cheaper now! What do other members do?
