Convert porch to 'half' awning?

Has anyone converted a Ventura Marlin (or Isabella Magnum) to fit into awning rail at one end, thereby avoiding the "gap" . . . Obviously, this would do away with one of the vertical pole/pad attachments. Any advice, please?
