When the children travelled with us we always went to Lake Garda but we now prefer Lake Maggiore and our favourite site/town is Valle Romantica at Cannobio. Maggiore is the easiest lake to get to as you can go Basel to Locarno via the St. Gottard tunnel and you are there.

Cannobio is arguably the most attractive town on the lake although this year we also stayed for a few days at Conca d'ora near Verbania which is an ACSI site so about 19 Euros instead of 33! From Verbania you can cross the Simplon pass and can visit Zermatt. See my separate posts on Zermatt and the Matterhorn.

To go from Interlaken to Italy you may need to go back to Bern because the Susten pass is probably not suitable for a caravan but others may have advice on this and there is information on all Swiss tunnels and passes in the Club's European guide.

Agree with Davd. The site I recommended is probably about 4 amps so care is needed. Many Italian sites have low amperage supply as the weather is usually fine so there isn't much need for electricity.

hitchglitch thanks for the tips cant find your Zermatt/Matterdorn posts though.

Post headed "Simplon Tunnel" on page 2 and post headed "Visiting the Matterhorn" on page 8. I can never get the search to work on my iPad!

I noticed though that you plan to start in Italy then perhaps go to Interlaken. If you haven't been to Interlaken it would be the number 1 choice as there is much to do but the Simplon Pass to Zermatt is good as an alternative.

The biggest problem with Switzerland is getting a clear day to see the mountains so you might want to stay flexible. Maybe plan to go to Switzerland first but if the weather is poor drive on to Italy then try again on the way back. Maggiore and the Italian
lakes enjoy a remarkable micro climate. It can be cold and wet North of the Gottard then as you descend towards Lugano the temperature climbs and the weather clears.

We usually go tunnel to Calais and head to the municipal  at Obernai, Alsace, for a couple of days. From there it is one day only to Maggiore via Basel and Gottard or also one day to Interlaken via Bern.

We are tied to Italy first as we are heading to the Grand Prix at Monza, so we are heading down through Holland  Germany and Switzerland from Ijmuiden. Then after the GP the Italian Lakes followed by a semi central base to tour Switzerland we've paid the
motorway tax after all. Then head North again 3 weeks in total any help from the members would be greatly appreciated.
