Germany/Switzerland dog friendly sites

We are intending to travel with our dog to Germany and Switzerland next summer. Have any members experience of this? While CC sites here have dog walks, on the whole, is there anything of a comparison abroad? She is a large dog and needs off lead walking
and we thought also it might mean we had to leave the site for morning 'toileting' too. We havent yet taken her abroad and are anxious we will not be too constrained. If anyone can recommend certain sites, it would be most helpful.

Dogs are actually far fewer in member on European campsites than they are on UK Club sites, and I honestly cannot recall a site with a designated dog walk/lavatory area in the way the Club provides them. The  expectation  is that dogs will be taken off the
    site.

Our dog is well travelled abroad and doubt you will find many/any sites with integrated dog walks, we do not book and just turn up at all our ACSI sites and never finding it a problem exercising her off site. We are walkers ourselves so apart from her morning and evening 'outing' we are out sightseeing during the day which always includes a time for her to be off lead, odds on there will always be a trail on exiting the site unless you choose urban.

Once you have your location just use Google maps to give an idea of the surroundings

We have travelled in Germany for years and last 13 with the caravan.  We don't have a dog but have travelled with friends with a Westie.

In Austria and Germany you will find many folks with dogs on site Equally as many as here in the U.K. Most of the ACSI CC sites we have been to have excellent doggy Showers and cater for dogs.  There is always plenty of places to walk around the sites.

Both countries are more dog friendly than the U.K. You can take your dog into shops, not food, and cafes, bars and restaurants without a problem.

Apologies Dianne and not wanting to turn this into a 'toileting' thread, by 'around the sites' is that onsite or outside of the site. Just that I have always left the site for 'dog toileting'

Firstly, you'll find that France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria are just as dog friendly as the UK (often more so!).

Continental sites don't feel he need to provide specific 'dog walks' but you'll be able to tell from the site descriptions and reviews online which have convenient walks just outside the site (as in the UK, you need to keep them on a lead in the site and
    pick up any inadvertant poos).

I'm typing this on a site in Germany on the way back from 5 weeks in Germany/Austria with 2 labs.  We've had a great time (and the dogs have).  Go for it.  For details of sites that are good for dogs look here

    and here

(My own site reports will be on there in a week or so!)

You will love it, we have never had a problem other than the small restrictions that travelling with a dog does bring and that is by choice, best of luck Smile

other than the small restrictions that travelling with a dog does bring

Personally speaking we would find the restrictions of travelling with a dog enormous - it would prevent us from doing at least half the things we do on holiday, but there is no way that dog owners will see that point. So I can only say that I hope your holiday
    goes well.

How about adding the full quotation ET which was"other than the small restrictions that travelling with a dog does bring and that is by choice", which means by choice it is a small restriction for me and other dog owners which the OP is, for you it would be enormous so by choice you dont have a dog.

Yes indeed if you see the restrictions as small . I won't argue or quarrel. Good wishes to you.

I can understand why non dog people think of the restrictions differently to those of us who travel with dogs - its just the way we have always done things!  One thing I have found in France is that the majority of dogs on sites are MUCH smaller than my
two, a Labrador and a GSDxRottweiler - I suspect it may be the same in Germany as many years ago I used to take a Labrador shopping and to the bank with me - and was always given a very wide birth!

I hope you have a wonderful time away with your dog - mine love to travel and after the first few days you will wonder why you worried about it!

The restrictions of travelling with a dog in much of Europe are often far less than travelling in the UK! I recall the year before we started caravanning and vaguely thinking about taking our then Retreiver to Germany and Austria we asked at the hotel we
were staying at if they took dogs. They were somewhat puzzled and responded saying 'but why wouldn't we?'...... I think it is debatable whether dog owners generally have smaller breeds abroad, there were plenty of large dogs on the site we stayed on last month
in Austria including quite a few retreivers and pointers. Our dog has been on or in numerous trains, buses, cable cars, chair lifts, ferries, river boats, even breakdown recovery trucks (twice) whilst abroad in the course of 3 trips as well as into countless
cafes, restaurents, department stores, visitor centres etc etc. How many of those are accessible with a dog in the UK? You will find restrictions around some of the lakes - Bodensee for example does not allow dogs in the water - and watch out for ticks if
venturing into the big outdoors. So for the OP, go for it and you will all have fun!

The advice about ticks is sound and also applies to the UK.

Pay attention in bracken where deer might have passed by and learn how to remove them properly from yourself and your dog.

    Lymes disease is very debilitating.
