Ferries and Dogs

We are looking to travel to France this summer but we now have Cavalier dog and are concerned about the ferry trip.

Any advice please?

Thinking that the Tunnel may be the best option as he can then stay in the car with us. 

Concerned about leaving him alone in the car (in his cart) on the car deck. 

Any experiences would help.
