Do we always need to book in advance?

Im in the process of planning an extended family holiday in the caravan with my family in July and August. We are going to travel round the uk visiting friends and family. Im planning on just using CLs to keep costs down but wanted to know if its always
necessary to book in advance as we would like a certain amount of flexibility. Thanks Alex
