Going to Provence in a week or so and disturbed by the news of forest fires in the region.

Our destination is flexible but thought the Avignon area to visit Arles/Nimes would be our target.

Anyone been there or is there to provide an update?

Forest fires happen every year - but you get plenty of warning to  evacuate the site.  Floods are far more sudden and dangerous if you are on a site beside a river in that part of the world - and you may get very little warning of them.

We have been going to the Avignon area for about ten years and never seen a fire. I don't believe that it is prone to fire, most incidents seem to be inland from the Med. coast.

If you are looking for a site in a slightly less popular area try Les Genêts d'or at Bagnols-sur-Cèze (Acsi). It's next to a lovely river with Beavers and not far off the Autoroute going South.

Provence is a big area and whilst there have been fires, most of the Departement is unaffected.  Avignon/Nimes seems to be fine and there are plenty of sites away from forested areas.

The whole of the south of France is tinder dry at the moment, because of lack of rain.  We have had no rain at all for almost a month - and temperatures in the low to mid-thirties most days.  That is in the Aude - in the Languedoc - and we've seen Canadairs flying over our house frequently over the last few days, but never seen any actual fires.

If you want to avoid the risk entirely then I would stay somewhere further north where there has been more recent rain.
