The Ospreys are back !!

Most of the young have now left their respective nest, with just a few remaining such as the pair at Llyn Brenig, at least one at Loch Balgarvies, and one, of the four, at Poole as of today.

Now that all, or nearly all, of the Ospreys have started their migration to warmer climes I look forward to the spring and seeing who has been able to make it back to their nests, and what new partnerships will become established.
Below is a link to the season-end blog from the team at Manton Bay which makes interesting reading I think.

A well written and delightful read, Nell, what with all those ups and downs, trials and tribulations. Hope remains for next season though. Now looking forward to the events of the ‘25 breeding season, let that be less stressful for all concerned.👍🤞

I guess virtually all the Ospreys will have now migrated to their winter destinations. Good luck to them all and fingers crossed that they fair well and many return for another interesting season here. Below is a link to an end of season blog from Birds of Poole Harbour such makes interesting reading.

Great article Nellie, very interesting. I have so enjoyed watching the Poole Harbour Osprey webcams for the last couple of years, good luck to them all. I even emailed them when I was worried about the chicks being covered with the black plastic bought to the nest; OH thought I was bonkers!!! Until next year and fingers crossed for them all.

Glad you found it interesting heddlo, and I must admit that black plastic was a worry. Glad it didn't cause too much of a problem and thankfully the wind assisted in its removal.

It's here: Osprey 'The Movie'. Well, not quite, rather a wonderful five part series that will be launching every Friday over the next five weeks celebrating the success of the 2024 Osprey season at Careys Secret Garden, Poole Harbour.

The record has been broken for the latest ever Osprey in the harbour with Scottish male ‘511’ being seen again today (11th November) in the Middlebere Channel, breaking the previous record of 5th November. He may have migrated this afternoon with the improved weather conditions

The Dyfi Osprey Project Family Tree

On this date last year NCO, the female Osprey arrived at her nest at Loch of the Lowes. I wonder who will be the first back to those nest sites monitored by cameras this year? There have been a couple of sighting of Ospreys passing through the country already.

There have been reports of sightings of the occasional Ospreys during the last week and then today two visited the Manton Bay nest. At 08:27 Blue 25 (10) arrived on the nest, she is not the resident female but has been seen at the nest in previous year before heading to get down next in the Rutland Project area. Then at 16:12 Blue 33 (11) landed and he is the resident male, and he arrived here on the same date last year! Watchers are now waiting for his long-time mate 'Maya' to show herself.
Hopefully we will get to see them both in a few weeks time when we stop nearby on our journey homeward.

Fingers crossed for all the Osprey this year, looking forward to following the progress of all this year. I particularly follow Poole Harbour 022 and CJ7, who had a brilliant brood last year. We are hoping to get a visit there and a harbour bird cruise later this year.

Still no sign yet of the resident female, Maya, at the Manton Bay nest, but Blue 25 has been back and accepted fish supplied by Blue 33, who has attempted mating with her as well as getting the nest to his liking once again!!

Good news today on two fronts! Firstly at 09:52 Maya, the resident female, arrived back at her nest at Manton Bay and "persuaded" the intruding to move on and she then took up residence!
Secondly, this afternoon at 14:27 the resident female NC0 arrived back at her nest at the Loch of the Lowes. It will be interesting to see if the male that arrived there late in the season last year, after the death of Laddie, will return.

Reports of another 2 male Ospreys in areas covered by cameras. The male at Threaves was seen on the nest at 08:04 today, and the partner of Blue 25, who had intruded on the Manton Bay nest last week, Blue 11 is back at Gwash, close to where their next is.

A second Osprey has been seen at Threaves, not the resident female from the nest that can be viewed from the observation point, but at a second nest site in the area.
There was another intruder at the Manton Bay nest today, HJ8, who was soon seen off by Maya. The intruder is the mate of Blue 30 who was seen at R. Gwash this morning, and their nest is also in the Rutland region.

As well as Idris at Dyfi there have been quite a few arrivals at monitored nests over the last few days. The first arrival at any of the Keilder sites was the resident female, KX7, at nest 7, on the 21st, which is the earliest record of a returning breeding bird there. There have been 3 seen at Balgravies Loch but no positive identification yet. At Glaslyn the resident female, Ellen, arrived at 11:50 on the 22nd, and at Poole their breeding male, O22, was first seen at 13:59 on the same day. A 06:40 on the 21st an unringed female intruded at the Manton Bay, Rutland, before being chased off by Maya, and there are now 5 other Ospreys in the Rutland Project Area, 25 (10), 30 Male and 30 (05) Female, the male Blue 11 and T7. The pair at Threaves have both arrived, the male 4 days ago and the female, Blue KC, 2 days later, and mating has already taken place.

More news of arrivals today with the resident male White YM seen on the nest at Foulshaw at 11:15 today. At Poole 1H1, a 2022 Manton Bay bird was on the nest. She is not the resident female, having nested lady year in Germany. There is a report of 4 Ospreys in the Glaslyn valley with the resident pair on the Pont Croesor nest. Yesterday at the Tweed Valley project an unringed female, possible their Camilla, was sighted. Finally 372 the female from the Llyn Brenig arrived back at 15:54, returning a week earlier than last year.

At the Loch Doon nest both of the resident Ospreys, Angle and Frankie, had returned by the 24th. On the 26th at Foulshaw an unringed female arrived around 11:45 and has been, so far, accepted with gusto by the resident male YM!
Kielder has seen two more female arrvals. At Nest 4 the unringed resident Mrs 69 was first seen at 09:25, and then KM 13 showed up on her No.6 nest.
J3 Telyn arrived at the Dyfi site at 12:40 today and an unknown female arrived at 07:56 on th Ciril nest at Threaves.

Mrs WN watches Idris at Dyfi a couple of times a day. She saw Telyn arrive today. Within 1 minute of her arrival Idris had not only provided her with the other half of his fish dinner but also mounted her. Not wasting any time is he? He could have let her finish the fish first.😁
