Ford Kuga spare wheel

I have just bought myself a 2022 Ford Kuga 2Ltr Mhev.

Like most modern vehicles now days come with out a spare wheel. I worry about going long distances towing a caravan and the state on the roads ( potholes etc ) with out one. Often when on holiday in the hills and mountains you can't get a mobile phone signal to summon help.

I have found online Road Hero spare wheels.

Has anyone experience of these and are they any good.

Thanks

I don't know about that company but did get spare wheel with an emergency spare tyre from the Wheel Shop for my Kia Niro. I don't tow but it might be worth a look.

You have two cheaper options, that I have taken on previous vehicles. Firstly buy a second hand rim and get a tyre of your choice fitted, or just get a space saver spare off e-bay. You can safely carry either option in a zip up plastic bag from IKEA, where you will find this is a perfect fit:-

DIMPA storage bag, transparent, 65x22x65 cm - IKEA

Or you may be lucky and find you have a well in your boot floor.

Either way I suspect you will also need to source a decent jack.

Our current Volvo didn’t come with a spare wheel and like you we worried about towing without one so I bought a suitable alloy wheel and then got a cheapish tyre put on it and we carry it in the in the boot. It does take up a bit of space but better that than being stuck

I agree with eribaMotters. Get a second hand wheel and fit a cheap tyre to use in an emergency.

I would avoid space savers as many manufacturers do not consider them safe for towing, although I have seen no evidence to support the idea.

Thankyou very much for your comments. I had a look on wheel shop but couldn't find one to fit my vehicle.

I'm thinking now of trying to get a proper size rim and new tyre to carry rather than a space saver just to be safer. The extra space this would take up wouldn't amount to much.

Unfortunately where the spare would normally go is where the battery for Mhev is now on this model.

I like the idea of the Ikea bag though. It looks a good.

    Thanks.

This is my answer to the problem! A bit OTT, I know, but I really didn't have a lot of choice. No room for a full-sized spare in the boot well because of the Adblue tank and to have put this one in the load space would have taken up an awful lot of room needed for other things - like the dog cage!

My concern arose when I read in the small print in the Mayday terms and conditions was that if you don't have a serviceable spare wheel - they will provide one at the owner's expense. Not so much worried about the 'expense' bit - but more to do with where would you get a spare wheel and tyre for a not-too-common car such as the Touareg on a Bank Holiday weekend - which is when - by what's it's law - it's going to be needed🤨

I have a well in he boot for a spare but they have mounted the radio and CD unit in there.

I had thought that the Mayday policy gave you a £150 excess if there was no serviceable spare, but it seems they have changed that. I assume they are able to obtain a steel rim for all popular sizes, but it would be interesting to hear from them if this is possible.

Finding a wheel at night for any model might be a problem though, as most suppliers would be closed.

Is the Toureg wheel an unusual size as I had never thought it would be, although it is a bit less common than many models?

"Is the Toureg wheel an unusual size as I had never thought it would be, although it is a bit less common than many models?"

@Wildwood - two issues here Ww - one - my model is the off-road version - no longer produced and has 18" rims whereas I believe the current Touareg has 20" rims. That alone cost £150 from an on-line breakers yard and I was lucky to find one.

Two - whilst, of course it would be possible to get 18" rims - it's the PCD of the studs that varies between manufacturers and I understand the VW wheels are a bit odd in this respect!

The reason I did it was because, many years ago, I was towing a boat trailer down the M5 with our inflatable boat and outboard on the back of my Disco. A trailer tyre shredded on the M5 and the rim was damaged badly as you would expect - and I wasn't aware of it until a passing motorist waved frantically at me whilst overtaking. We were due to have a week's holiday in Dartmouth - which we did - whilst the boat had its holiday in a garage in Weston-super-Mare while they tried to source a replacement wheel!

I'd borrowed the trailer from the marina in which our boat was moored in Newark - otherwise I would have had the foresight to have had a spare. Lesson learned and never forgotten🙄

Given what you say I would look to buying a replacement, assuming you can fit it in the boot. It sounds as though it might be expensive though.
