Autotrail-Thetford Fridge

I have just had the Habitation service done and only thing he found was the fridge will not work on gas.  So when we thought we were putting the gas on for a few hours, we were not.  On electricity it works, just not gas.

He showed me an error no 9 on the readout which means that a sensor that detects heat (I think) is not working.

He did say that I will not be able to replace this sensor, they do not make them and I will not be able to find one anywhere.  The only option is a new fridge, which will have to wait until next year.

I do not know the model number, but it is a full height fridge freezer, the Thetford Manual says it covers 'N' models.

Any info/help will be appreciated.

Greylag the model number should be on a label at the back of the fridge compartment. Try the Leisure shop for parts. I would be very surprised if they cannot supply the part or eqivalent.

    Oh wow!  Thanks David.

That Video gives me some confidence to have a look myself.

One of the comments stated the same £ signs that I was given.

Could it be as easy as the video????  I will study the video to fully understand the system.  Many thanks for all the suggestions.

Peedee, I will get the details tomorrow and try LS should I need to.

This site comes up trumps each time

    Update!

Just spoken to an engineer servicing another caravan next to mine and he told me exactly the same story my engineer told me.

You cannot get a new PCB anywhere, they do not make them now and no-one repairs them.

This engineer says the first step is to strip and clean the burner and make sure everything is correctly positioned and then if it still does not work, it will be a new PCB which you can't get.

I am about to book the service and see how it goes.

Well.........I have just had the gas burner serviced by a different engineer and he said it is not a problem with the gas burner.  Definitely it is a problem with the circuit board.

He confirmed that they stopped making the boards a while ago and he does not know of anyone making them now.

No problem most of the time as we always go for hookup, just have to watch out on hot days when we are away from the site.

    Thanks

I don't know it this applies to the sort of circuit board you have but I have heard of companies that can repair them. Is that perhaps an avenue worth trying?

    David. Thanks for replying.

That was my first thought, but the engineer said that there is no-one at present repairing these boards.  Evidently one firm(Apuljack Electronics) is considering? this repair so I will have to wait and see.

It's not urgent, van will be in storage soon and by spring things might have changed.

Just heard from Apuljack they do not repair 'error 9's', so we will have a van that cannot use gas anymore.

We always use hookup so not too much of an issue, unless we want to have a day out in hot weather.

My engineer said good luck if you decide to replace the fridge, as that fridge will not come out through the main door and likewise with the new one going in!

Never know how things may change in the future.

Try A&R Electronic Developments, Cannock they say they do repairs to a list of N type fridge circuit boards and the cost seems reasonable

Hope they can help and they if they can let us know. I used them a while back when I dropped the mover remote and it broke and got a much cheaper replacement

    Amesford

Just had a reply which looks very promising, one or two reasons why they might not be able to help.

    Most promising so far.

Just emailed my engineer to see if he will be able to remove the PCB for me.

    Many thanks!!!!

If the worst happens it might be worth trying beakers to see if they have the part or even a full fridge.

SFM are one of the largest and can possibly help. You might however be sick of the whole thing by then and just go for new, but they are very expensive.

My engineer knows of these people and has used them in the past.  He will remove the board in a few weeks and check if it is repairable, if it is glued in place, then it is not....but he is confident all will be ok.

    Many thanks for the info.

Replacing the fridge if affordable, is a non-runner as these fridges are too big to go through the doorway.  God only knows how you replace one.

Probably something drastic, like removing the front seats, steering wheel, then sideways through the passenger door or removing the front skylight & hoisting it out the roof surprised

Amesford….Well done…Brilliant. Sent the PCB to A&R in Staffordshire on Tuesday, just had message to say 'Payment required all repaired'! Absolutely outstanding service.

Repaired PCB arrived yesterday, pretty impressive turnaround, seven days.

    Thanks.

That is good to know because I have a problem with the same make of fridge due to the circuit board. In my case the fridge works fine on gas and electric on site it is just that it won't work on 12 volts. I haven't bothered too much about that because it doesn't cool down much when travelling. Leisure Shop do offer an equivalent replacement for about £125 but I have not thought the costs worthwhile for my fault.

At last the fridge is working on gas!

The repair was refitted and it still wouldn't work and Mark my engineer was stumped. He said that the only other thing it might be was the gas side, igniter/burner. He replaced these and still no go. The PCB was returned to the repairer, who kindly offered to test the repair and he found that his repair was working perfectly and returned it to me at no cost…free postage.

Mark then came and refitted it, tweaked the igniter and away it went. I now have a fridge that works on gas.

Long drawn out job, distance for engineer each time and posting, but it is done.

Richard at A&R Electronics came up trumps.

Amesford…..Brilliant reply, without it I would have been stuffed….thank you very much.
