Very sad to hear of the passing of former deputy PM John Prescott. One of the last breed of politicians with genuine conviction, he was our constituency MP during the years we lived in Hull. I once had the pleasure of meeting him (and it was a pleasure!) when he visited the school I was teaching in. Away from the cameras he was a genuinely nice, and very amusing guy. Given the way our politicians have gone lately I doubt we'll see his like again.

Best remembered for his classic response to Blair after he punched the guy who 'egged' him.

"Well Tony, you told me to make contact with the voters......"

I didn't particularly like the guy but you cannot deny his commitment to his Socialist roots but including his views on aspiration, hence 'two jags'.

Amazing to think that if a politician today thumped somebody (no matter how much they deserved it), they would simply not survive the inevitable 'outrage' on social media.

    RIP John Prescott.

Very sad indeed. A proud Welshman, a director and avid supporter of Hull Kingston Rovers. A man of principles. R.I.P. Mr Prescott.

Living in the outskirts of Hull, John Prescott often featured in our local news and whilst I didn't particularly like his politics, he was a committed and dedicated MP who did a great deal for his constituents and the City. What I did like about him was that he was a character and - gosh - how we are missing such characters amongst today's occupants of Westminster.

According to this morning's BBC obituary, before he died, he said, "Oh I suppose when I'm gone, all they'll show about me is a 60 second clip of me thumping the guy that threw the egg at me".

R.I.P Lord Prescott - you will be sorely missed.

I was at a couple of events where he was a key speaker back in my working life, and very good speeches they were as well. Didn’t always agree with everything he said, but he was the kind of politician that seems sadly lacking nowadays. Committed, not frightened to tell it like it is, full of humour. He was a welcome antidote to a lot of the “spin” politics that started in the 1990’s. RIP a decent politician.

I think you would always have got a straight answer from him, on message or not! He had some involvement in Milton Keynes when he was in charge of housing. 20 years ago he wanted to build £60,000 prefabricated houses designed by Richard Rogers. They were built and unfortunately were sold at prices no where near what was envisaged. I think today they are on the market for £350000. Farewell to one of the big characters of UK politics.
