Different Locks On A Twin Axle

Sorry if this is a dumb point, but I'm a complete beginner. I have a Bailey Grande Pegasus twin axle, I have one AL-KO wheel lock & now realise I need two locks for better security. I don't want to fork out another 300-odd quid for another AL-KO.

Would I be OK with one AL-KO lock and one lock of a different type, e.g. a Milenco Wraith or a Nemesis Ultra ?

As they say the only dumb question is the one you don't ask... (and pun intended). It's not dumb anyway.

It will depend on what your insurance company states you must have so I would check with them as nobody on here knows your T&C about locks. I think it's all to do with the secure rating of the wheel lock, for example your insurance company might state it has to be Sold Secure Gold Standard.

If it helps I switched from Al-ko to a Wraith and my insurance (with the club) infomed them and they were fine with the new one.

As a complete beginner are you OK with putting on the Alko lock, some (like me) found it very fiddly to put on especially if using leveling ramps (look at Lock and level devices) and that's why I changed. I've seen twin axles with two none-Alko locks.

    Thank you Cornersteady

I also have my insurance through the club. As far as I can remember the woman on the phone said it should have two locks but didn't specify which ones to use.

I haven't actually tried using the AL-KO lock yet as I am recovering from surgery & haven't been able to go near the caravan since we bought it & had it put in storage.

If they're that fiddly to put on and take off I may well 'bin' it and go for two wraith/ultras!

Got a Gemini twin wheel lock and fit it to off side wheels worth a look. Satisfies my two wheel lock for insurance

My pleasure. With the Alko you have to get the wheel in exactly the right position for the receiver behind. The only way I found was to bend down and look and then move the caravan with a mover (have you got one?) till it aligned. With a Wraith you can put one on no matter where the wheel is.

Have a look here to see what I mean:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_KE76iPX7M for the Alko

and here for the Wraith. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3_n4LJ11gA.

There's a Wraith mark two which is as easy. I have the mark 1 and it's fitted in under a minute.

If you get a discount on your insurance for the ALKO or it specifies this on the policy you will almost certainly need two on the same side to meet the conditions. If it specifies just two locks you can fit the Wraith or the similar Nemisis or probably almost any other type. You have to fit both to the same side as otherwise it is possible if both are on one axle to adjust the towing height to get the locked one off the ground. A very risky idea as you would be stopped if the Police spotted it.

In theory it is possible to fit one on either axle but at different sides but not sure what the point would be.

Having re-read the insurance cover it says "When the vehicle is unhitched it is a requirement to immobilise it using one of the following - hitch lock, wheel lock, etc."  It doesn't specify any particular make of wheel lock, it just says I have to have one fitted.

Obviously fitting a second lock makes everything more secure, plus I think I qualify for a discount if I have a second lock.

I assume to qualify I just need two locks, not necessarily having two ALKO locks.

Probably true but ask the insurer as they will differ in their requirements.
