Where to go next?

Hi All,

My first time posting on the discussion forum!

I currently drive a 2021 Skoda Superb 4x4 DSG 2ltr TDI Estate which I use for towing. It's great and has masses upon masses of space in it, especially in the boot with an ok max towbar nose weight of 90kg.

My PCP is up soon and I need something decent which is higher with lots of interior space. My mother is mobility limited and my dad can't get in tight spaces - I love the Superb but it is just too low for them.

I've been waiting patiently for the 4x4 Diesel version of the new VW Tiguan to be released but there is no sign of it at the moment, I'm also worried it will be took costly and/or finance will be too much.

Our 2014 Coachman caravan tends to be nose heavy so I need something that can tow it safely. I've looked at alternatives such as the current Toyota RAV4 PHEV but this has a tiny max nose weight of 70kg.

I really want a 4x4 as I prefer the peace of mind.

Has anyone got suggestions for a decent 4x4 SUV that won't break the bank with a decent max nose weight at all please?

    You don't give the weight of your van, but Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe are good tow cars. 

    I towed a single axle Lunar Clubman with my Mazda CX5 and it was a good combination.

    Yeah would be good if I gave that data....

    It's a 2014 Coachman Vision Extra 565/4 which has a MRO of 1,440kg and MTPLM of 1,595kg

    If you were happy with your 4x4 Superb and want something taller, then why not a 4x4 Kodiaq. 

    I'm guessing you want more bhp than the Karoq offers, even though it has a max towing weight of 2,100kg.

    Something to consider though is the height. I know of two "mature" owners who found the extra height was too much for elderly bones and hip issues. They ended up buying compact/lower SUV's.

    When we went for our first 4x4 back in 2004 it transformed a back problem I had, had. Then when I started to get a hip problem it was much easier with the then Sorento. Can't really advise OP on current towcars as I have not towed for nearly 12 years but you make a good point.

    Thanks all, I'll have a look .

    My previous vehicle was a Karoq before I started towing and I found it did not have the backseat space I needed to transport my father, it was too tight. The kerb weight ratio on the caravan is also 99% which is a little high for my tastes (that said its 95% on the Superb but I never tow with a full load on board).

    I'll have another look at the Kodiaq, the previous version had a small back row again and the price of the new one is rather high - the configurator came out at almost £50k on one the other day!

    We tow with a Suzuki Across PHEV (it is a rebadged Toyota RAV4 PHEV) it tows as well as the diesel equivalent, our 2016 Swift Conqueror is also nose heavy, however at 70kg nose weight we have noticed no instability, very very rarely does the ATC gives us the odd tug.

    Have you considered a non PHEV Toyota RAV4.
