A470 & A487
Hi, Has anybody towed from Porthmadog to Tenby using the A470 and A487. I have looked on Google maps and the road does not look to bad. Be good to know of other peoples views and experiences. Trip planned for next september.

Hello. We left Freshwater East and headed back to Carmarthen on the A477, from there we took the A485, then forked left on to the B4459, which brings you to the A487 just south of Newquay. The A487 then is straightforward to Porthmadog. We had no problems on that route, and were towing. I know you are doing it the other way round. I have no experience of other routes, they might of course be even better, but this one saves quite a few miles.
I would recommend a stay at Shawsmead to break your journey. A dolphin cruise from New Quay should not be missed! And it’s a lovely stretch of coastline. We particularly liked Llangrannog.
Good luck.

If your OS map shows them as having no steep gradients and as both are A roads, I’d go for it.

Did Anglesey to Haverfordwest five years ago with a caravan. Only thing I remember was thinking as I drove through the centre of Wales 'I must come back to this bit of Wales'.

The website for Coed y llwyn site gives guidance on the best way to get there. That might help.

The A487 north from Machynlleth is perfectly do able. It may look windy but is a good surface, used every day by large articulated milk tankers and timber wagons. The loop around on the A470 has a quite steep section up and over between Dinas Mawddwy and Dolgellau. I would stay on the A487.
